Xander Photos...and thoughts on friendslock
Sleepy Sailor

I put a few new ones on Flickr.  I love this photo so much.

There are many good things right now.  Xander is doing so much more every day; he's just more of a person.  My work is coming along well, even if there are frustrating moments.  Kate and I managed to find some time to ourselves on Valentine's day, which was much needed and well-valued.  We found a really great restaurant that is, well, not quite in our neighborhood but not so far away.

But there is some serious suckage, which I can't really talk about in public on the intarwebs until we decide what to do.  Sorry.  So we're a bit down around here at the moment.  If you try to catch us, and we're sulky or whatever, that's why. Nothing about you.

I'm also trying to decide whether to take this journal substantially friends-only.  I'm not shy about what my real name is on here.  I'm also about to list a link to this journal in a publication, now that I'm dipping into fandom studies.  I'm just thinking perhaps the fannish stuff, and some not-so-important stuff, should be the only public things.

IDK; what do you think?  What choices do you make about being public or not public in various capacities on your journal? What do you lock, not-lock, etc?

Seriously - that kid is f-in' adorable. :) Must go check out Flickr.

As far as f-locking things: I've f-locked everything because someone tracked me down here who knew me though a volunteer group (the only reason she knew my username here was likely due to the email account I used to be in the loop with that group). I wasn't comfortable with her reading my journal because I didn't know her well, and because a coworker was on that volunteer board as well, and that was a little too close for comfort. I didn't want to give up this journal, and really, the people who mattered were already friended here (provided they were on LJ in the first place), so it wasn't a huge deal.

I might suggest starting a second journal (one on something like wordpress.com instead of a more "immature" site like LJ) or simply start using the notes function on Facebook for your more academic pursuits. (Facebook would allow more networking and a more "professional" front, and you've already got that set up, and can filter quite a bit on there, if you don't want pics of Xander to be public to everyone and all that.) It means maintaining two places, but I'm a believer in keeping personal and professional separate to a degree. I rant here in ways I never would on something like Facebook, and I keep my personal details very sparse on my other blog. On my main website, at the moment anyway, it's purely professional (press releases, portfolio, etc.) because I don't want people looking to hire me to see my photos and such (even though there's nothing online I'd consider inappropriate).

Did that make sense? I think so. It might be clearer in my head than in my typing. :)

Additionally: we can go out drinking any time you're in Boston-ish. :)

(And either and/or both of you are free to call and talk whenever you need to. I assume you know this, but I like to reiterate. :) )

The thing about LJ is that this is where contemporary media fandom happens, and, if I keep doing fandom studies, I have to have a presence here that's a professional one. But, I agree, LJ is much better for personal things than professional ones. (Although--LJ filtering allows for a lot more subtlety than wordpress, from what I've seen.)

I'm keeping FB very, very professional; I'm actually using it a lot for research, when I can't find people's contact info another way. And I don't mind maintaining multiple online presences, since I honestly spend all of my waking hours online at this point, it seems.

I see your point about the fandom thing. I hadn't really thought that bit through so much, since I'm not involved. As far as LJ vs WP filters, you're probably right - I've never filtered anything on my WP blog because I don't have to. (It's purely cooking and gardening, whereas here is much more personal.)

Perhaps the answer is to either super-filter stuff about family on your LJ account or to start a separate LJ/WP/whatever blog for your personal stuff. That way, you can keep yourself on LJ for the fandom research, and you won't lose the "brand" you've already built for yourself with this sn (since I assume you've participated quite a bit already under this name).
