The thing about LJ is that this is where contemporary media fandom happens, and, if I keep doing fandom studies, I have to have a presence here that's a professional one. But, I agree, LJ is much better for personal things than professional ones. (Although--LJ filtering allows for a lot more subtlety than wordpress, from what I've seen.)
I'm keeping FB very, very professional; I'm actually using it a lot for research, when I can't find people's contact info another way. And I don't mind maintaining multiple online presences, since I honestly spend all of my waking hours online at this point, it seems.
